3 Easy Tips to Improve Your Home Wi-Fi
The current pandemic has forced many people to WFH, so having a fast and reliable Wi-Fi is a must. But if you are struggling with slow Wi-Fi, here are a few tips that may help you improve your Wi-Fi experience.
- Turn off 2.4GHz. Because most Wi-Fi clients today support dual bands, unless you have a real need to use 2.4GHz, it’s best to just go with 5GHz band. It is faster, less congested, and less susceptible to interference.
- But what if you still have 2.4GHz-only devices? No problem; just create 2 different SSIDs — one for 2.4GHz and the other for 5GHz, and name them accordingly. The reason we don’t use the same SSID is because dual-band clients may decide to connect to the congested 2.4GHz band even though the 5GHz is available. By using different SSIDs, you can pick and choose which band each device connects to without leaving it to device’s own decision.
- Install Wi-Fi router where clients are. Wi-Fi uses different modulation techniques to encode and transmit data — each at different speed. So what makes a router chooses which modulation to use? The answer: client’s received signal strength; in another word, how loud clients can hear the router.
- As clients move farther away, signal attenuates, so the secret is to keep clients as close to the router as possible for the best performance.
- Remove obstacles. Closely related to the point above, Wi-Fi works best where clients have direct lines of sight to the router. Putting a router behind a closed door, inside a cabinet, or above ceiling weakens the signal forcing the router to choose a slower modulation.
